Let me warn you, timber framing is very fun and may turn into a lifelong pursuit. I started timber framing 6 years ago with a 6 x 8 cabin. Since that first frame, I have built three pavilions, a chicken coop, a round wood outdoor kitchen, a tool shed, a garden arbor, a kitchen table, and am currently working on a 16 x 20 genuine english pub. Now when I go to build I don't really consider doing anything else but timber framing. I firmly believe that anyone can master the basic skills to begin their timber frame journey, usually in as little as a one week class. The rest will come as you put your new skills into practice. After our first workshop that Jed and I taught, one of the students became a traveling timber framer ( he had no previous experience before the class). There is timeless beauty and connection to an age-old tradition in the art of timber framing. This technique has stood the test of time and is a far superior method (in my opinion) to stick framing, on so many levels. Come join Jed and I for a week of learning new skills, tons of hands on work with simple, elegant tools, camaraderie, fun and the joy of building something together. When you leave, you will have the know-how and the desire to go home and start your own timber frame project.
I think I've been a builder in some form since I came out of the womb. Some kids played, I worked with my dad. He was a general contractor and I learned most aspects of general carpentry before I graduated. At 19, I bought my first fixer upper house. At 23, I realized I appreciated the finer aspects of building and started my own company building custom furniture. This is where I first started using mortise and tenon joinery. It just seemed like the right way to do things. On a smaller scale of course, but essentially the same as timber framing. After 12 years of building high end furniture, I grew tired of building things that would last a lifetime, but may be taken to a thrift store a few years after building the piece, merely because it was no longer the latest style in the eyes of some interior decorator. That is when I discovered timber framing, at my buddy Dave's first timber frame raising. I had read about it but this was my first hands on experience with it. I was hooked. I knew that I wanted the next chapters of my life to revolve around teaching people how to take financial control of their housing through alternative building techniques, and have an enjoyable rewarding experience in the process.
